Cheltenham Day 2 Tips: Day 2 Highlights

The second day of the festival is certain to be a major occasion. Why?

Two words: Ladies Day.

That’s right – this is that day on which women don their fantastic hats and beautiful dresses, immersing themselves more in the atmosphere than ever. There’s always a terrific buzz to the festival on Ladies Day, whether you’re placing bets or not. Let’s look at the highlights.

The day kicks off at 13.30, with the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle. This is a Grade 1 National Hunt race open to horses aged four or above, and takes place across 2 miles and five furlongs. Throughout the course, there are ten hurdles to be leaped.

Later, the RSA Steeple Chase will see horses of five years old and above run around three miles, jumping 19 fences along the way.

This is followed by the Coral Cup, which has been running every year since 1993. As the name suggests, this is sponsored by Coral, one of the biggest names in betting, with a hugely-successful chain of branches and a popular online venue. This runs around two miles and five furlongs, with ten hurdles from beginning to end. As it is a handicap race, certain horses will have a slight advantage over others.

After the Coral Cup, the BetVictor Queen Mother Champion Steeple Chase will wow spectators. This is open to horses of five years old and over, and measures around two miles on the Old Course. Horses are required to jump 12 hurdles.

The Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase is next, open to five-year-old horses and older, measuring around three miles and seven furlongs. This was a handicap for a long time, but as of 2016 changed to a conditions race (which means weights carried by the horses varies according to specific conditions applied to the race, such as the sex and the age).

The penultimate race of day two is the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, open to horses aged four and over. This Grade 3 race takes place on the Old Course and runs around two miles in length, with eight hurdles to jump.

Finally, Ladies Day rounds off with the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, open to horses between four and six years of age. This takes place on Cheltenham’s Old Course, and runs at around two miles. The Weatherbys Champion Bumper has taken place every year since 1992, though it was once known as the Festival Bumper.

So, that will bring Ladies Day to a close. Countless amounts of money will have been wagered, and the luckiest betters will walk away in profit, perhaps with life-changing prizes!
